In the January 2011 issue of Canadian Apartment Magazine, we told you about the innovative programs that Greenwin has developed, with the help of former boxer and motivational speaker Spider Jones, in order to help youth gain valuable skills, be nourished by breakfast and after school dinner programs and enjoy recreational time, at their complex, The Oaks, near Jane Street and Wilson Avenue.

On June 23, the Spider’s Web Youth Empowerment Initiative and the TD Hoops Basketball court were launched at The Oaks. This area, which has been traditionally been underserved with community programs, can now look forward to boxing, computer training, mentoring, literacy and arts programs. Doorstep Neighbourhood Services will be delivering the programs on a day-to-day basis, and Literature for Life will be providing the literacy program.

Jones spoke about the need to engage children and help them deal with peer pressure and low self esteem. “It's not where you come from in life; it's where you're going that counts."

Kevin Green, President of Greenwin and Ward 7 City Councillor Giorgio Mammoliti were also on hand for the ribbon cutting, and to try out the boxing ring, while community members gathered and enjoyed lunch.

"This is a great example of how the private sector has stepped up to the plate to support a community in need." said Councillor Mammoliti.

"With the swimming pool, community centre and now, the basketball court, literacy and mentorship program, this site has become a community hub," says Green. "That's been the goal from the start."
